Exciting Leap for National Defense: Cabinet Committee on Security Greenlights 240 Advanced Aero-Engines for IAF’s Su-30 MKI Aircraft
Cabinet Committee Endorses Procurement of 240 Aero-Engines for Su-30 MKI Aircraft from HAL
The Cabinet Committee on Security has given a green light to the procurement of 240 aero-engines for the Indian Air Force’s Su-30 MKI aircraft. This significant approval pertains to the Buy (Indian) category and involves Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) supplying the engines at a total cost exceeding ₹26,000 crore, inclusive of all taxes and duties.
The Ministry of Defence announced that the delivery phase for these aero-engines will commence after one year from now and is expected to continue over an eight-year period. A noteworthy aspect of this procurement is the substantial indigenous content, exceeding 54%, which is a result of indigenizing several critical components of the aero-engines.
These engines will be manufactured at HAL’s Koraput division, representing a crucial step in boosting the domestic aerospace manufacturing capabilities. This initiative aligns with the broader objective of enhancing self-reliance in defense production under the Make in India scheme.
By prioritizing indigenous production, the approval underscores the government’s commitment to build and sustain an advanced defense ecosystem within the country, thereby bolstering national security and fostering economic growth in the defense sector.
Engagements such as these exhibit India’s determination to strengthen its defense forces with state-of-the-art technology while promoting domestic innovation and industry. This strategic move is expected to not only enhance the operational readiness of the Indian Air Force but also set a benchmark in the ongoing process of modernizing the nation’s defense infrastructure.
