Housekeepers Demand Justice: Strikes Erupt at Top Hotel Chains for Fair Wages and Daily Room Cleaning
Fatima Amahmoud, a housekeeper at Boston’s Moxy hotel, faces daunting tasks such as cleaning 17 rooms per shift, including heavily soiled ones. The option for guests to decline daily room cleaning, touted as eco-friendly, has increased workloads as hotels cut labor costs amidst post-COVID-19 worker shortages. Unionized housekeepers, represented by UNITE HERE, are advocating for the reinstatement of automatic daily room cleaning, higher wages, and better working conditions. This labor struggle has led to strikes by around 10,000 hotel workers across several U.S. cities.
The industry’s recovery from the pandemic has not translated to better conditions for workers, many of whom are women of color. Unstable work schedules and insufficient pay remain pervasive. The American Hotel and Lodging Association acknowledges staffing shortages and reports widespread wage increases but says guest preferences and budget constraints complicate service restorations.
UNITE HERE has achieved some successes, notably in Southern California, but faces resistance from hotel chains. Workers like Maria Mata and Chandra Anderson highlight the personal financial strain caused by erratic hours and inadequate pay. The union’s efforts continue as they push for more equitable compensation and workload policies in ongoing contract negotiations.
