Rahul Gandhi Champions Tourism Revival in Wayanad with Heartfelt Call Amidst Heroic Relief Efforts
Rahul Gandhi, leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, stressed the urgent need to rejuvenate tourism in Wayanad during a discussion on September 1 with local Congress leaders about relief efforts following recent landslides.
Gandhi underscored the critical role of the tourism sector in the region’s recovery, noting that Wayanad’s picturesque landscapes remain mostly untouched by the landslides, which affected only specific areas.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Gandhi stated, “Wayanad is steadily recovering from the devastation caused by the landslides. While much remains to be done, it’s heartening to see communities and organisations coming together in relief efforts.”
He pointed out that revitalising tourism is essential for supporting the local population, particularly after the monsoon season. Emphasising that the perception of the entire region being dangerous is misleading, Gandhi expressed confidence that Wayanad would soon be ready to welcome visitors with its natural charm.
Gandhi also highlighted several challenges that need urgent attention in the relief and rehabilitation process, including poor interdepartmental coordination, inadequate compensation, rental issues, lost livelihoods, and the impact on tourism.
“As far as I know, there are four or five things which we need to put pressure on. One is poor inter-departmental coordination in relief and rehabilitation, second is inadequate compensation, third is the rent issue that I raised, then many people have lost livelihoods, including vehicles and plantations, and finally the impact of tourism,” he explained.
Adding to the complexity of recovery efforts, a study by World Weather Attribution (WWA) found that the heavy rainfall triggering the landslides was intensified by about 10 per cent due to human-caused climate change.
In summary, Gandhi’s focus remains on coordinating effective relief and rehabilitation strategies while promoting tourism to aid Wayanad’s economic recovery, despite the substantial challenges posed by climate change and infrastructural inefficiencies.
