BCCI’s Domestic Cricket Mandate Commended by Chetan Sharma
New Delhi, Aug 31: Former chief selector Chetan Sharma has praised the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) decision to make domestic cricket participation mandatory for players. This move underscores the importance of the Duleep Trophy, a key domestic tournament in Indian cricket since the 1961/62 season. Scheduled to start on September 5, the Duleep Trophy will be held in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, and M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.
Sharma highlighted the significance of the mandate, stating, "It is a great decision by the BCCI. Our job is to play cricket, and we should embrace every opportunity to play competitively. Hosting all Duleep Trophy games at one venue is an excellent idea as it brings together India’s top 50-60 players."
This year, the Duleep Trophy will feature four teams instead of the traditional six zonal teams. The change is due to a scheduling overlap with India’s home Test series against Bangladesh, which begins on September 19. Players selected for the Test series will be replaced in the Duleep Trophy.
Bangladesh is entering the Test series with momentum, following a historic 10-wicket victory over Pakistan in Rawalpindi – their first-ever Test win against Pakistan.
Chetan Sharma emphasized the need for India to register dominant victories against Bangladesh, despite acknowledging the challenges of international cricket. "International cricket is never easy, regardless of the opponent. India needs to prepare differently for Bangladesh and Australia. As we are in the middle of the World Test Championship, it’s crucial to secure emphatic victories over Bangladesh," added Sharma.
This decision by the BCCI aims to ensure that senior players remain engaged with domestic cricket, maintaining a high competitive standard and contributing to the overall growth of the sport in the country.
