Agartala: Central Team Assesses Flood Damage in Tripura
In Tripura, an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) commenced an on-the-spot evaluation of the damages and losses incurred from the prolonged floods during August 19-23. The six-member team, led by Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, B.C. Joshi, has split into two sub-teams to survey flood-impacted regions such as Belonia in South Tripura, Sonamura, Udaipur, Dumboor, and Khowai.
An official report highlighted the severe impact of the floods, which resulted in the loss of 32 lives, extensive damage to public and private properties, and an estimated financial loss of Rs. 15,000 crore. In light of the significant devastation, the state government has declared Tripura as a Natural Calamity Affected Area.
B.C. Joshi’s team visited Belonia, one of the worst-affected subdivisions in South Tripura. Meanwhile, the second sub-team, headed by Mahesh Kumar, Dy. Director of the Finance Ministry, toured the Gomati district. They inspected various affected locations, including the damaged Agartala-Udaipur highway and several irrigation and cropping projects. This team was accompanied by additional district magistrates Jayanta Bhattacharjya and B.B. Das, state disaster management project officer Sharat Kumar Das, and other district officials.
The IMCT, comprising senior officials from the Departments of Agriculture, Expenditure (Ministry of Finance), and Ministries of Jal Shakti, Rural Development, and Road Transport and Highways, arrived in Agartala on Wednesday. They participated in a review meeting with top state government officials at the civil secretariat. During the meeting, Revenue Secretary Brijesh Pandey provided an overview of the flood damages, supported by accounts from Secretaries of Departments such as PWD (Roads & Buildings), Water Resources, Agriculture, and Fisheries.
The comprehensive assessment aimed at formulating a robust recovery and rehabilitation plan for the flood-affected areas of Tripura.
