Meghalaya Takes Bold Stand to Curb Surging Essential Commodity Prices: Minister Ymbon Speaks Out
Meghalaya’s Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs Minister, Comingone Ymbon, has rolled out a strategic plan to combat the surge in essential commodity prices in the state. Addressing the state assembly during its autumn session on August 29, in response to a call attention motion by VPP MLA Ardent M Basaiawmoit, Ymbon detailed the government’s multifaceted response to this critical issue.
“The department remains committed to protecting the interests of consumers by ensuring the availability of essential commodities at reasonable prices,” Ymbon asserted. Central to this mission is the regular review of retail prices to craft effective market intervention strategies.
A significant component of the government’s efforts is the crackdown on unfair trade practices. Enforcement actions have markedly increased, with raids escalating from 79 in the 2021-22 period to 274 in 2023-24. “These efforts demonstrate the government’s commitment to curbing malpractices and ensuring that essential commodities are available to all citizens at fair prices,” Ymbon elaborated.
In enforcing the Prevention of Black-marketing of Supplies of Essential Commodities Act (1980) and the Essential Commodities Act (1955), the government has empowered departments to detain individuals whose actions disrupt the supply of essential goods.
Emphasizing collaboration, Ymbon noted, “Through continuous monitoring, strict enforcement, and collaboration with both state and national agencies, we are confident that the measures undertaken will help mitigate the impact of price rises on the people of the state.”
Recognizing the multifactorial nature of price rises, Ymbon assured the assembly that extensive coordination with districts, sub-divisions, and stakeholders is underway. The overarching aim is to shield vulnerable sections of the population from the adverse effects of price instability.
In conclusion, Ymbon’s comprehensive approach underscores the state government’s proactive stance in ensuring the availability and affordability of essential commodities for all Meghalaya residents.
