Three Arrested for Alleged Murder of Dimapur Gaonbura: Contradicting Reports Emerge
Kohima, August 29 (Morung Express News): In a significant development, Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Y Patton disclosed that three individuals have been apprehended in connection with the fatal shooting of Abdul Kayum Talukdar, the Gaonbura (GB) of New Market, Dimapur, which occurred on June 7. Patton revealed this information in a written reply to MLA Kuzholuzo Nienu during an Assembly session on August 29.
Patton clarified that a criminal case has been registered under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, coupled with Section 27(3) of the Arms Act, 1959, at Sub-Urban Police Station, the same day the incident took place. "A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has also been formed to probe the case. To date, three individuals have been arrested and are currently in judicial custody. The investigation is actively ongoing," Patton said.
However, Patton’s statement appears to contrast with earlier reports from the Nagaland Police. On July 5, during a media briefing at Rhododendron Hall, Police Complex in Chümoukedima, Director General of Police (DGP) Rupin Sharma mentioned that five people had been detained in connection with the June 7 murder. The current status of those additional two suspects remains unclear, raising questions about whether they were released following further scrutiny.
In other news, regarding the arrest of ‘alleged drug kingpin’ Bahar Uddin, Patton shared updates on the case tied to Narcotic Police Station Case No. 022/2023 filed under Section 28 read with Section 27A of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. Uddin was detained on March 21, 2024, and an SIT has been assigned to the investigation. He is currently held under the stringent Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PITNDPS) Act, 1988.
These incidents depict Nagaland’s ongoing battle with violent crime and illicit narcotics trade, both commanding dedicated investigative efforts from the authorities.
