Staggering Crackdown: Over 30k Illegal Foreigners Deported Since 1985, Shocking Revelation in Guwahati Assembly
Guwahati: Over 30,000 Illegal Foreigners Deported Since 1985
Guwahati: Assam has deported over 30,000 illegal foreigners since 1985, according to Atul Bora, minister for border area protection, development, and implementation of the Assam Accord. Speaking in the state assembly on Wednesday, Bora disclosed that 30,113 people have been deported. Responding to a query from Congress MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed about the Accord’s implementation, Bora emphasized the government’s intent to fence the remaining unfenced border areas.
Bora referenced a 2020 high-level committee report on Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, which aims to protect the cultural, social, and linguistic identity of the Assamese people. The committee’s legal and constitutional recommendations are under review by a sub-committee, including Assam government ministers and leaders from the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU). This sub-committee has convened five times and is scheduled to meet again soon.
Bora assured that a comprehensive plan for implementing the Assam Accord would be submitted to the central government within three months. The Assam Accord, signed in 1985 following a six-year agitation led by the AASU and the All Assam Gana Sangram Parishad, mandates the identification and deportation of illegal immigrants. Clause 6 specifically calls for constitutional, legislative, and administrative measures to safeguard Assamese heritage.
Discussing border security, Bora noted that Dhubri district and South Salmara Mankachar share a 141.9 km border with Bangladesh, Cachar district 27.3 km, and Karimganj district 98.3 km, with 4.35 km of the Karimganj border yet to be fenced.
In recent related events, the Assam government has tabled a bill for compulsory registration of Muslim marriages to replace the 1935 law, aiming to prevent child marriages and polygamy. Separately, the ED attached Rs 34 crore in a misappropriation case involving Assam government funds.
To maintain peace, Assam authorities took swift action after student groups in Sivasagar issued an ultimatum to Bangladeshi settlers to leave, summoning 27 organizations to sign a peace bond or face legal action.
This ongoing effort underscores Assam’s commitment to border security and preserving local identity while addressing legal and welfare concerns.
