Urgent Plea: Badlapur Residents Demand Swift Justice for Child Safety After Heartbreaking Assault
#MychildNotforPolitics Posters Emerge as Badlapur Recovers from Protests Over Alleged Assault in School
Posters bearing the slogan ‘#MychildNotforPolitics’ have appeared throughout Maharashtra’s Thane district, igniting discussions about the alleged involvement of politicians. Badlapur is gradually regaining normalcy after three days of protests and unrest following the reported sexual assault of two minor girls at a local school. The incident has left residents deeply concerned about their children’s safety.
The demonstrations began on August 20, halting the city as thousands protested the police’s delayed response in registering an FIR against the accused—a member of the school’s cleaning staff—and the school’s failure to report the incident promptly. The massive agitation led to a political blame game, with the ruling Mahayuti calling the protests "politically motivated," while the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi criticized the government for its "negligence."
Parents, anxious about sending their children back to the Kulgaon area school, cite inadequate safety measures and overcrowded classes. Some families, facing financial constraints, feel trapped. The public outrage led to protesters breaking into the school and vandalizing its nursery section. Disruptions continued at the railway station, where 42 suburban trains were partially canceled and 14 long-distance trains diverted. The police arrested 72 people and filed FIRs against at least 300 protesters.
The turmoil extended to the Kharwai Naka area, where locals vandalized the house of the 24-year-old accused, forcing his family to leave. Despite police intervention, the atmosphere remains tense. Both the accused’s and the victims’ families have been barred from speaking to the media, though the accused’s family insists on his innocence.
As Badlapur grapples with the aftermath, residents remain on edge, fearing for their children’s safety amid ongoing security and political tension.
