Speakers at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago used more than 109,000 words over four days, juxtaposing the 110,000 words spoken at last month’s Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. Analysis of the word choices reveals distinct thematic differences. Key terms used at the Democratic convention included “freedom,” mentioned 227 times, compared to just 67 times at the Republican event. Democratic speakers also frequently referenced concepts like “woman,” “joy,” and “weird.”
Conversely, Republicans emphasized issues related to “inflation,” mentioning it seven times more often than Democrats did, and highlighted “God” and the cost of “groceries” three times as frequently. The term “assassination” or “assassin” was mentioned 18 times by Republican speakers, yet it appeared only once in the Democratic context.
Comparative word usage among notable speakers highlights further divergence. Former President Donald J. Trump’s acceptance speech notably outstripped Vice President Kamala Harris’s in length, using over three times as many words. Specifically, Trump prioritized words like “job(s),” “tax(es),” and “border,” whereas Democratic speakers such as President Joseph R. Biden Jr. and Tim Walz focused on themes of “democracy” and “economy.”
Certain words were distinctly absent from one convention’s transcripts while prevalent in the other’s. Democrats used terms like “abortion,” “Project 2025,” and “convicted felon,” which were not mentioned at the Republican convention. Republicans, meanwhile, spoke of “indoctrination,” “illegal aliens,” and “invasion,” terms not heard in Democratic speeches.
This linguistic analysis illustrates the sharp contrast in focus and priorities between the two major parties as the presidential election of 2024 looms closer, reflecting their underlying values and campaign strategies.
