Cultural Heritage Workshop on Yige Script Concludes in Ladakh
KARGIL: The week-long certificate programme on Yige writing and reading, organized by the Ladakh Academy of Art, Culture, and Languages (LAACL), Kargil, in collaboration with the Himalayan Cultural Heritage Foundation (HCHF), concluded with a ceremony at Academy Hall, Kargil, on Friday evening.
This initiative drew participants from diverse backgrounds including cultural enthusiasts, scholars, students, and civil society members, all united in their goal to preserve the ancient Yige script. Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, Chairman/CEC of LAHDC Kargil, presided over the closing ceremony. In his address, Dr. Akhoon lauded the programme, highlighting the vital role cultural roots play in shaping community identity. He emphasized that the Yige script is a crucial link to the rich heritage and knowledge of Ladakh’s Balti and Purgi communities.
Key figures such as EC of Rural Development, LAHDC Kargil, Er. Phunchok Tashi, and Director of FS&CA, UT Ladakh, Tahir Hussain Zubdavi, also graced the event with their presence. EC Tashi commended the collaborative efforts of LAACL and HCHF, while Director Zubdavi underscored the importance of incorporating Indigenous languages like Yige in the educational curriculum to preserve the unique identity of the region.
The program honored both the participants and the experts who conducted the workshop, recognizing their contributions to this cultural initiative.
