Historic Breakthrough: Nagaland and SBI General Forge Transformative Insurance Deal to Enhance Disaster Resilience
To strengthen disaster management, SBI General Insurance and the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) have signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to introduce a Parametric Insurance Solution. This initiative aims to enhance Nagaland’s resilience against natural disasters by providing tailored insurance coverage for the state’s specific needs.
The newly launched Nagaland Disaster Risk Transfer Parametric Insurance Solution (DRTPIS) will focus on extreme weather events, including excessive and unseasonal rainfall. Parametric insurance speeds up financial recovery by triggering payouts based on predefined weather conditions, thus shortening the recovery time after natural calamities.
Nagaland, among India’s most disaster-prone states, has experienced a 200% increase in climate-related incidents from 2018 to 2021. The new insurance solution is anticipated to significantly lessen the financial toll of such incidents.
Naveen Chandra Jha, Managing Director and CEO of SBI General Insurance, highlighted the initiative’s importance, stating, “In recent years, India has faced numerous natural disasters. This parametric insurance will offer crucial support by ensuring timely compensation and aiding in quicker recovery.”
Nagaland’s Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, describing it as a pioneering step in disaster risk management. “This initiative will help us build a robust disaster response system, ensuring effective support during emergencies,” he remarked.
The signing event saw attendance from key figures, including Vyasan R, IAS – CEO & Home Commissioner, and senior delegates from SBI General Insurance.
This collaborative effort marks a significant advancement in disaster preparedness for Nagaland, aiming to mitigate the financial and societal impacts of natural calamities through innovative insurance solutions. The parametric insurance approach is expected to provide swift economic relief, reinforcing the region’s ability to recover and thrive amidst increasing climate challenges.
