Governor Visits Namthang Krishi Vigyan Kendra
NAMCHI (IPR): On Thursday, August 22, 2024, Governor Om Prakash Mathur visited the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Namthang. During the visit, the Governor emphasized his deep interest in agriculture and stressed the importance of innovative support to elevate agricultural productivity. He advocated for the formation of self-help groups among female farmers, highlighting the need to empower women within the agricultural community. Governor Mathur urged collective efforts to enhance Sikkim’s agriculture and floriculture sectors, envisioning their transformation into thriving industries with governmental support.
A video presentation of the "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" campaign was showcased at the event. J.D. Bhutia, secretary of the Agriculture Department and Raj Bhawan, elaborated on the benefits farmers receive under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY), which provides subsidised irrigation equipment. Bhutia also discussed the Krishi Vigyan Kendra’s efforts to address soil acidity to improve crop yields and the significant impact of the Krishi Unnati Yojana and the Organic Mission Scheme, which supports the cultivation of 75,000 hectares of organic land.
Tshering Thendup Bhutia, director of the Agriculture Department, proposed establishing two new KVKs in the Soreng and Pakyong districts to bolster local agricultural development and modern farming practices. I.P. Shivakoti, a senior scientist at KVK Namthang, gave a detailed presentation on the centre’s initiatives promoting advanced agricultural techniques and sustainable farming.
The Governor, accompanied by other dignitaries, toured the KVK lab, farm premises, and exhibition stalls set up by various Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs). He awarded skill certificates to five FPO candidates and participated in a plantation drive under the "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" campaign. Additionally, the Strategic Research and Extension Plan (SREP) book by the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA), Namchi, was released.
His visit concluded with a tour of the Crafted Fibres processing unit supported by NABARD in Namthang. The Governor received a warm welcome from local officials, including Namchi DC Anupa Tamling, senior SP Dr. T.N. Gyatsho Bhutia, and other key figures from the Agriculture Department and KVK staff.
