Desperate Search for Sicily Yacht Passengers Enters Critical Third Day: Hope Fades Amid Heartache
The fire service dive team departed port and headed to the dive site off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, for the third day of searching for six missing tourists after the luxury yacht Bayesian sank during a storm on Monday. So far, four bodies have been recovered from the wreck, according to Salvatore Cocina, head of the civil protection agency in Sicily. This brings the total number of confirmed deaths to five, with two individuals still unaccounted for.
Specialist divers face significant challenges due to the depth of approximately 50 meters and various obstacles within the sunken vessel, such as narrow access points, thick glass windows, and tangled cables. The difficult conditions limit the divers to just 10-minute intervals underwater.
The missing individuals include British technology entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, Morgan Stanley International Chair Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy, and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, jewelry designer Neda Morvillo. The Italian coastguard confirmed the identity of one victim, Canadian-Antiguan chef Recaldo Thomas.
The yacht was violently rocked by a storm around 4 a.m. local time on Monday, rapidly capsizing and sinking near the Sicilian port. Lynch, recently acquitted in the U.S. on conspiracy and wire fraud charges related to the sale of his software company Autonomy, was celebrating his acquittal with friends and family on the yacht.
Among the rescued were Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares, a one-year-old baby, and the baby’s parents. Separately, Stephen Chamberlain, former vice president of finance at Autonomy and co-defendant in Lynch’s trial, was fatally struck by a car while running in Cambridgeshire, England, over the weekend.
