Shocking Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case: LIVE Updates as SC Takes Bold Action
Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case: Supreme Court Set to Hear Incident Suo Motu Amid Widespread Protests
The Supreme Court will hear a suo motu case related to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital on Tuesday. A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud has prioritized this issue, scheduling it as the first matter for hearing at 10:30 am. The court’s involvement comes amid nationwide protests and strikes by doctors, demanding better security and justice for the victim.
Simultaneously, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has arrived in Delhi to discuss the matter with President Droupadi Murmu and national leaders. During a Raksha Bandhan event at Raj Bhavan, Governor Bose voiced concerns over the state’s deteriorating democracy and stressed the urgency to protect women.
The trainee doctor’s parents have publicly criticized the efforts to suppress protests and expressed disappointment over the handling of the case by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Health services nationwide have been disrupted as doctor’s strikes enter their 10th day. The Union Health Ministry has responded by approving a 25 per cent increase in security deployment at central hospitals to ensure the safety of medical professionals.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the case from Kolkata police following a Calcutta High Court order. The West Bengal government, led by the Trinamool Congress (TMC), faces intense scrutiny over allegations of stifling protests. Senior TMC leader Arup Chakraborty exacerbated tensions by warning doctors during a rally that they would not be protected if public anger turned against them.
As the Supreme Court prepares to deliberate on this sensitive case, the nation watches closely, hoping for justice and stronger safeguards for frontline healthcare workers.
