MHA Calls for Regular Law and Order Updates Amid Nationwide Protests Over Kolkata Doctor’s Death
New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has instructed police departments across all states and union territories to submit law and order reports every two hours following protests by medical professionals. These protests erupted in response to the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
The directive, issued through a fax message to police chiefs, emphasized the need for ongoing monitoring of the situation. "A continuous two-hourly law and order situation report should be sent to the MHA control room from 1600 hours today," the MHA stated. Reports can be submitted via fax, email, or WhatsApp, with the necessary contact details provided.
The protests, sparked by the August 9 incident, have seen doctors and medical students demonstrating nationwide, demanding a central law to prevent violence against healthcare workers and enhanced security measures in hospitals. The accused, a civic volunteer named Sanjay Roy, was arrested the day following the crime.
A 25-member Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team is currently probing the case, having already interviewed Roy and other key figures including the college principal, Dr. Sandip Ghosh. Plans for a lie-detector test on Roy are underway, and a team from the Central Forensics Science Laboratory (CFSL) has been dispatched for a psychoanalysis test.
These protests have disrupted health services across various locations, with medical staff rallying for definitive action to ensure their safety and security in the workplace.
This heightened vigilance by the MHA underscores the gravity of the situation as the authorities work to maintain order while addressing the concerns raised by the medical community.
