Southern Tamil Nadu Doctors Strike to Protest Kolkata Medical Student Tragedy
Ramanathapuram Government Medical College students held a procession on Saturday condemning the sexual attack and murder of a medical student in Kolkata. Doctors across southern Tamil Nadu, including those from both government and private hospitals, initiated a 24-hour strike to protest the horrific incident at R. G. Kar Hospital in Kolkata. Demonstrators donned black badges and staged protests, calling for better security measures in hospitals and demanding severe punishment for the perpetrators.
The strike significantly disrupted normal operations in major government hospitals, with elective cases affected. Despite assurances from hospital deans, doctors reported that many patients faced inconveniences due to the strike. Medical professionals from Theni Government Medical College Hospital emphasized the necessity of the strike to highlight the urgency of protection for female staff in hospitals.
The nationwide strike was organized by the Indian Medical Association, with senior doctors from various districts participating to show solidarity with the victim’s family. In Madurai, private hospitals like Velammal Medical College Hospital and Meenakshi Mission Hospital held demonstrations. In Ramanathapuram, students and doctors joined the agitation, calling for a thorough investigation and rapid justice.
Peaceful protests were also observed in Virudhunagar, Dindigul, and Sivaganga districts, where doctors urged the government to implement permanent solutions to ensure their safety. "Though doctors save lives, there is a persistent insecurity that must be addressed," speakers emphasized, expressing hope for legal action.
This strike underscores the medical community’s demand for better workplace security and justice for the victim, aiming to prevent such tragedies in the future.
