Sudden Shift: Nalin Prabhat’s Acclaimed DG NSG Tenure Interrupted for Crucial AGMUT Cadre Role
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has authorized the inter-state deputation of NSG Director General Nalin Prabhat to the AGMUT cadre for a three-year tenure. Prabhat, an IPS officer from the Andhra Pradesh cadre, will have his current tenure as NSG DG curtailed to facilitate this move. The Ministry of Home Affairs has directed that Prabhat be relieved of his duties to join the AGMUT cadre immediately, notwithstanding typical inter-cadre deputation guidelines.
Simultaneously, senior IAS officer Govind Mohan has been appointed as the next Union Home Secretary, filling the position currently held by Ajay Kumar Bhalla. According to the order, Mohan, who is presently the Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, will act as the Officer on Special Duty in the Home Ministry before officially succeeding Bhalla upon the completion of Bhalla’s tenure on August 22, 2024.
Mohan, originally from Uttar Pradesh, has prior experience in the Union Home Ministry, where he served as joint secretary and additional secretary. He took up his role as the Secretary of the Ministry of Culture in October 2021. His predecessor, Bhalla, has served as the Union Home Secretary since August 2019, holding one of the most significant bureaucratic positions in the country and achieving the longest tenure in this role.
These strategic appointments underscore a period of transition within India’s top security and administrative ranks, with experienced officers being entrusted with pivotal responsibilities to maintain the integrity and effectiveness of national governance.
