Junior doctors and students of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Guwahati, staged a protest on August 14 against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, West Bengal.
Dr Kumarjyoti Deka, President of the Gauhati Medical College Junior Doctor Association, stated that their protest is an act of solidarity with ongoing nationwide demonstrations. “This is a solidarity protest. Protests have been ongoing in West Bengal for 3-4 days and across India. Our colleague at RG Kar Medical College was assaulted and brutally murdered on duty. We are opposing this,” Dr Deka said.
Dr Deka urged the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the West Bengal government to take immediate action to ensure the accused are punished according to the law. “We request the West Bengal Government and CBI to apprehend the accused soon and ensure they are punished as per law,” he added.
In a significant development, a team of senior CBI officers arrived in Kolkata to investigate the case. This intervention follows an order from the Calcutta High Court, which transferred the case to the central agency. The CBI team, including medical and forensic experts, is set to examine the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the trainee doctor’s body was discovered on August 9.
The tragic incident has sparked widespread outrage and protests among medical professionals across the country, demanding swift justice and enhanced safety measures for healthcare workers.
