Heartbreaking Tragedy: CBI Launches Probe into Kolkata Trainee Doctor’s Death as Protests Continue
A team of senior Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officers arrived in Kolkata on the morning of August 13 to investigate the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. This move follows the Calcutta High Court’s directive to transfer the case to the central agency.
The CBI team, which includes medical and forensic experts, plans to visit the hospital’s seminar hall where the trainee doctor’s body was discovered on August 9. By the court’s order, the Kolkata police must hand over the case diary to the CBI by Tuesday, followed by other documents by Wednesday.
This tragic incident has sparked widespread outrage among the medical community. Resident doctors and medics at AIIMS Delhi, Indira Gandhi Hospital, and various other associations, including the Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA), announced on August 13 that they will continue their demonstrations demanding a central law to prevent attacks on medical personnel.
The Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) had initially decided to call off its strike after a meeting with Union Health Minister JP Nadda, who agreed to their demands for a safer working environment.
Compounding the tragedy, it was revealed that the trainee doctor’s parents were initially informed by a hospital official that their daughter had died by suicide. They were made to wait three hours outside the hospital before being allowed to see her body.
The case continues to unfold under the intense scrutiny of both the authorities and the public, reflecting the urgent need for stronger protective measures for medical professionals.
