Explosive Response: BBC’s Bold Defense Against Backlash Over Strictly 2024’s Star-Studded Line-Up
The BBC has addressed the backlash over the gender imbalance in the Strictly Come Dancing 2024 celebrity line-up. This week, the show unveiled its full roster of 15 celebrities, igniting fan excitement but also online criticism over featuring six female contestants compared to nine male celebrities. Fans swiftly pointed out the disparity, prompting a response from the BBC.
A BBC spokesperson stated that the show doesn’t adhere to specific gender rules and emphasized excitement for the new season. “There are many factors that influence the casting process to ensure a good mix of celebrities from various backgrounds,” they explained, underscoring that the casting approach has never been about meeting quotas.
Amid this, Strictly has also been under scrutiny following misconduct allegations against professional dancers Giovanni Pernice and Graziano Di Prima. Pernice was announced in June to be absent from the upcoming series, while Di Prima was removed in July after admitting to accidentally “kicking” his celebrity partner Zara McDermott. Both have publicly addressed the incidents, with Pernice denying abusive behavior and Di Prima apologizing for his mistake.
The star-studded lineup for Strictly 2024 includes Olympic hockey player Sam Quek, DIY SOS’s Nick Knowles, and former Arsenal footballer Paul Merson. Soap opera actors Jamie Borthwick from EastEnders and Shayne Ward from Coronation Street, Olympic swimmer Tom Dean, and actress Sarah Hadland from Miranda also join the cast. Additionally, the lineup features Love Island’s Tasha Ghouri, TOWIE’s Pete Wicks, JLS vocalist JB Gill, Go Compare’s Wynne Evans, pop icon Toyah Willcox, Morning Live’s Dr. Punam Krishan, and comedian Chris McCausland.
Strictly Come Dancing is set to return later this year on BBC One, with the spin-off Strictly: It Takes Two airing weeknights on BBC Two. Both shows will be available for streaming on BBC iPlayer.
