Shah’s Bold Assurance: No Bangladeshi Entry into Meghalaya, Promises CM with Steadfast Resolve
Major Relief for Northeast: Amit Shah Assures No Bangladeshi Infiltration
New Delhi, Aug 12 (PTI): In a significant development, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday assured Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma that no individuals from conflict-ridden Bangladesh would be allowed to infiltrate the Northeastern states, including Meghalaya, which shares a 443-km-long porous border with the neighboring country.
During a meeting with Shah, Sangma requested tighter security along the India-Bangladesh border. Shah responded affirmatively, assuring the deployment of additional forces to ensure the borders remain secure.
Sangma emphasized the Indian government’s commitment to maintaining peace and security along the borders. He mentioned that the Army and BSF were effectively monitoring the situation and that a night curfew had been imposed along the entire 443-km border with Bangladesh since August 5. Meghalaya Police are also on high alert to prevent any untoward incidents.
The Indian government has undertaken multiple measures, including increased troop deployment, to minimize infiltration risks along the border. The India-Bangladesh international border stretches 4,096 kilometers, with portions spread across Assam, Tripura, Mizoram, Meghalaya, and West Bengal.
As a further precaution, the East Khasi Hills District Magistrate has suspended all border haats (markets) in the district for trade operations with immediate effect.
In a separate meeting with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Chief Minister Sangma and Deputy CM Prestone Tynsong pushed for establishing growth hubs in New Shillong Township and other areas. Sangma also expressed gratitude to the Centre for approving new road projects worth Rs 2,500 crore under externally aided initiatives.
These measures underscore the government’s resolve to secure the borders and foster development in Meghalaya and the broader Northeast region.
