FBI Launches Urgent Probe into Alleged Cyber Theft of Trump Campaign Documents by Iran
The FBI is investigating claims that sensitive documents from Donald Trump’s presidential campaign were stolen through a cyber intrusion, and that there were attempts to access Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign data. This comes days after the Trump campaign alleged it had been hacked by Iranian operatives. Although the Trump campaign lacked specific evidence of Iran’s involvement, the accusation followed a Microsoft report revealing foreign attempts to interfere in the 2024 U.S. election. The report highlighted an incident involving an Iranian military intelligence unit sending a spear-phishing email to a high-ranking campaign official in June.
Anonymous sources confirmed that the Biden-Harris campaign was also targeted in the suspected Iranian cyber intrusion. Politico reported receiving documents from an anonymous AOL account claiming to contain research on Republican vice presidential nominee, Ohio Sen. JD Vance. The Trump campaign labeled these documents as illegally obtained and aimed at disrupting the 2024 election.
The FBI, which began investigating the incident in June, has been collaborating with tech companies to address the cyber threats. Despite these phishing attempts, there is no evidence that the intrusions were successful on the Biden-Harris side. The Harris campaign stated they are vigilant against cyber threats and unaware of any breaches.
Iran’s UN mission denied involvement, though Iran has a history of hacking campaigns. Microsoft’s report noted a steady increase in foreign influence attempts in the upcoming election, attributing earlier activity to Russia and more recent activities to Iran. The report suggests that both Iran and Russia are significantly involved in the 2024 election.
