Unite in Joy: Celebrate Madras Day with Passionate Organisations This Month!
Vincent D’Souza, editor of Mylapore Times, historian V. Sriram, and actor Mohan Raman convened for a press meet on Monday to discuss the upcoming Madras Day festivities. As Chennai celebrates its 385th anniversary, various organizations and individuals have collaboratively organized a series of events throughout the month.
Historian V. Sriram noted that this marks the 17th year of Madras Day celebrations, with increasing participation from government bodies and educational institutions. Vincent D’Souza, also the coordinator of Team Madras Day, emphasized the open invitation for collaborations across industries and educational institutions. This year, 53 events are planned, a number expected to rise to 100 by the month’s end. Among these activities, a multimedia contest for children, themed around stories of three old houses in their locality, has been announced.
Actor and film historian Mohan Raman outlined a variety of scheduled events such as heritage walks, quizzes, lectures, and exhibitions. The Madras Musings Lecture series is set to begin on August 17, alongside the Madras Quiz for Children held at different locales across the city. Sujatha Shankar, convenor of INTACH Chennai Chapter, spoke about the screening of “The Story of Madras, Chennai – First City of Modern India,” narrated by historian S. Muthiah. Additionally, Vinita Sidhartha, founder of Kreeda Games, announced an exhibition and talk on the city’s forgotten games, scheduled for August 17, along with video presentations featuring prominent Chennai citizens reminiscing about the city.
This year’s Madras Day celebrations promise a rich blend of culture, history, and community engagement, reflecting Chennai’s vibrant heritage and modern dynamism.
