Manipur’s Spiraling Turmoil: Eight Insurgent Groups Boycott Independence Day, Trigger Statewide Shutdown
At least eight banned underground groups in Manipur have declared a boycott of the upcoming Independence Day celebrations on August 15, calling for a comprehensive shutdown across the state. The Coordination Committee (CorCom), an umbrella organization representing six of these outfits, released a press statement urging citizens to abstain from participating in the festivities. CorCom has announced a complete shutdown from 1:00 AM to 6:30 PM on the same day.
Joining the protest, the Socialist Revolutionary Party (SOREPA) has called for a general strike from 5:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Additionally, the Alliance for Socialist Unity Kangleipak (ASUK) has backed the shutdown, encouraging residents to hoist black flags and observe the day as a “black day.”
These groups express discontent with Manipur’s post-colonial integration into the Indian Union, claiming it initiated a new phase of Indian imperialism. They contend that the state’s integration has led to repressive policies, which they believe have been a catalyst for the persistent violence and unrest in the region.
The collective resistance highlights ongoing tensions and the deep-seated issues contributing to the region’s instability, emphasizing the call for significant political and social reforms.
