Shocking Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case Sparks Massive Outrage: Medical Colleges in West Bengal Erupt in Fury
In a disturbing incident that has sparked widespread outrage, police have arrested Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, in connection with the brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at the State-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The arrest has ignited massive protests among junior doctors and medical professionals across the State.
Junior doctors, residents, and paramedics have organized demonstrations at multiple medical colleges, including RG Kar Medical College, Medical College Kolkata, Calcutta National Medical College, Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College, and several others. Hundreds of medical students and staff at RG Kar Medical College, where the tragic crime occurred, have taken to the streets, demanding enhanced security measures and strict action against the perpetrator.
The situation remains tense, with a substantial police presence on campus. Protestors have voiced their demands for better safety protocols, including the installation of functional CCTV cameras and real-time monitoring. Dr. Arif Naskar of RG Kar Medical College stated that medical services would remain suspended until authorities address their ten-point demands, which also include the immediate release of the victim’s post-mortem report and the establishment of a fast-track court to expedite the case.
Concerns over safety and inadequate facilities have been brought to the forefront by students and staff. Amrita Dey, a nursing student, questioned the feasibility of night duties given the current safety conditions. Another student highlighted the lack of basic amenities like washrooms, changing rooms, and resting areas, which exacerbate the daily struggles of medical staff.
Senior doctors have joined the protests, demanding accountability from college authorities. Dr. Aniket Kar called for the resignation of RG Kar Medical College principal Dr. Sandip Ghosh, accusing the administration of attempting to cover up the incident. A march by senior female doctors further emphasized the critical issue of safety for female medical staff in government hospitals.
The protests continue to gain momentum as the medical community rallies for justice for their slain colleague and seeks comprehensive reforms to ensure safety and security on hospital premises.
