Neeraj Chopra Narrowly Misses Gold, Secures Silver at Paris Olympics

Neeraj Chopra fell just short of retaining his gold medal in the men’s javelin throw at the Paris Olympics, finishing with a silver after recording a best throw of 89.45 meters on Thursday. Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem clinched the gold with an impressive throw of 92.97 meters, setting a new Olympic record, surpassing Denmark’s Andreas Thorkildsen’s 2008 mark. Nadeem’s dominance was evident with his final throw measuring 91.79 meters.

Chopra, despite a strong qualifying round with a throw of 89.34 meters, struggled in the final, managing only one valid throw out of six attempts. This performance still marked a milestone as he became the second Indian male athlete, post-independence, to win two individual Olympic medals. Wrestler Sushil Kumar and shuttler PV Sindhu also achieved back-to-back Olympic medals.

Grenada’s Anderson Peters secured bronze with a throw of 88.54 meters. The event saw seven athletes surpass the 86-meter mark, with three achieving season-best performances. Before this event, Chopra had never lost to Nadeem in previous encounters, making Nadeem’s victory particularly noteworthy.

This win was significant for Nadeem, who had previously thrown beyond 90 meters at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games. He joins an elite group of Asian athletes, including Chao-Tsun Cheng of Chinese Taipei, who crossed the 90-meter threshold.

Neeraj Chopra hailed from Haryana and rose to prominence after winning a gold medal at the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships. He made history with a gold at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, securing India’s first-ever Olympic gold in athletics. Chopra’s accolades also include medals at the World and Asian Championships, Commonwealth Games, Diamond League, and South Asian Games.

Neeraj Chopra’s Major Medals:

  • Summer Olympics:
    • 2020 Tokyo: Gold
    • 2024 Paris: Silver
  • World Championships:
    • 2022 Eugene: Silver
    • 2023 Budapest: Gold
  • Asian Games:
    • 2018 Jakarta: Gold
    • 2022 Hangzhou: Gold
  • Other Championships:
    • Multiple golds in Commonwealth Games, Diamond League, Asian Championships, and South Asian Games.

Neeraj Chopra continues to make India proud with his dedication and hard work.
