Tragic Incident: Worker Fatally Injured in Devastating Unichira Warehouse Lift Crash
A 47-year-old headload worker, Nasir, met a tragic end when a temporary lift collapsed at a warehouse in Unichira near Thrikkakara on Wednesday evening. Nasir, affiliated with the Centre of Indian Trade Unions and a resident of Nedumbarath, Vattekkunnam, suffered fatal injuries, as reported by a private hospital in Thrikkakara.
The Thrikkakara fire station received an emergency alert about the accident around 5:20 p.m. The incident occurred at a three-storey warehouse used for storing computer products, where Nasir was loading items from a nearby vehicle when the unfortunate event transpired. Preliminary investigations by officials revealed that the lift’s supporting rope snapped, causing the collapse. Other workers narrowly escaped injury as they were a few feet away from the scene at the time.
Initial findings highlighted critical issues with the lift’s maintenance, noting that the rope lacked the necessary strength and was not adequately greased. These deficiencies might have contributed significantly to the accident. A thorough investigation is underway to determine the exact cause.
In response to the incident, the Kalamassery police have registered a first information report and are set to carry out a comprehensive inquiry. The incident has raised serious concerns about workplace safety, particularly regarding the maintenance and inspection of equipment used by workers.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of stringent safety protocols in workplaces, especially those involving heavy machinery. The detailed investigation aims to bring clarity and ensure that such preventable tragedies do not recur, underscoring the need for enhanced safety measures and regular equipment checks.
