Shocking Distrust: Is the PLA Losing Faith in the Chinese Communist Party? | MorungExpress
Headline: Xi Jinping’s PLA Overhaul: Anti-Corruption Purges and Strategic Reforms
New Delhi, August 6 (IANS): China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has experienced significant changes this year, characterized by purges and structural reforms under Xi Jinping’s ongoing modernization plan. Initiated in 2012, Xi’s program aims to transform the PLA into a modern military powerhouse by 2027, supported by a $231.36 billion defense budget, up 7.2% for the third consecutive year.
Despite these advancements, corruption within the PLA, especially among high-ranking officials, has surged, questioning Xi’s control and trust in the military. In response, Xi has intensified anti-corruption efforts, extending to senior military personnel through the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI). Over 100 senior officials were purged in 2017, with ongoing investigations leading to the dismissal of notable figures such as former Defence Ministers Wei Fenghe and Li Shangfu.
The PLA Rocket Force (PLARF), overseeing China’s nuclear and ballistic capabilities, has been a particular focus. Senior officials like Commander Li Yuchao were removed on embezzlement and espionage charges, reflecting deeper systemic issues. Xi’s anti-corruption drive has also led to restructuring efforts, exemplified by the replacement of the PLA Strategic Support Force (SSF) with the Information Support Force (ISF) to combat cyber, space, and electronic threats more effectively.
These purges and leadership changes underscore a potential instability within Xi’s administration, suggesting challenges in maintaining loyalty and effectiveness within the PLA amidst rising territorial ambitions over Taiwan and disputes in the South China Sea.
Xi’s vision includes stricter control over these factions, as seen in the ISF being placed under the Central Military Commission’s direct oversight. The goal is to ensure unwavering loyalty to the party, emphasizing the urgency for a competent and loyal military as China’s global aspirations intensify.
