Sheikh Hasina Resigns Amid Violent Protests in Bangladesh: Key Developments and Reactions

In a significant political upheaval, Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on Monday following violent protests. Dhaka saw mass celebrations as Hasina stepped down after a 15-year tenure, reportedly fleeing to India and seeking asylum in the UK. An interim government is being prepared to take over, with Bangladesh’s Army chief, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, confirming the military’s involvement in establishing temporary governance to lead the nation to free and fair elections.

Key Highlights from Bangladesh:

  1. Protests and Casualties: Over the past month, at least 300 people died in protests mainly led by students opposing the civil service job quota system. The Supreme Court reduced the 30% job reservation for descendants of independence fighters to 5%, which did not satisfy the protesters.
  2. Supreme Court’s Role: Despite the reduction in job reservations, protesters demanded Hasina’s resignation, which ultimately led to her stepping down.
  3. Military’s Announcement: General Waker-Uz-Zaman stated in a televised address that the military would establish a caretaker government and manage law and order after consulting with political leaders.
  4. Protests Intensify: Thousands stormed the Ganabhaban, the Prime Minister’s official residence, setting vehicles on fire and looting. Parliament was also breached.

India’s Response:

  1. Border Security: India heightened security along its 4,096.7 km-long border with Bangladesh. West Bengal, Assam, and Meghalaya are on high alert, with Meghalaya imposing a night curfew.
  2. Government Actions: Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security. National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also engaged with the unfolding situation.
  3. Logistics and Travel: India facilitated safe passage for Hasina’s aircraft and suspended flights to and from Dhaka.

Sheikh Hasina reportedly remains in India until her asylum request to the UK is processed. The incident underscores the volatile political landscape in Bangladesh and its ripple effect on regional security dynamics.
