Delhi’s Indifference to Assam’s Soil Erosion Crisis Sparks Outrage: Rakibul Hussain’s Heartfelt Plea
The annual monsoon floods in Dhubri, driven by the River Brahmaputra, have once again resulted in widespread devastation, particularly through extensive soil erosion. This relentless force consumes thousands of hectares of fertile agricultural land, government properties, and residential areas, leaving the inhabitants of the char regions—sandy lands surrounded by water—in constant despair.
Rakibul Hussain, the Member of Parliament for Dhubri, has expressed deep concern over this unceasing calamity. He has pledged to make soil erosion a top priority, a matter often overshadowed by the more immediate threats posed by flooding. “Delhi remains oblivious to the devastating impact of soil erosion, despite its significant consequences,” Hussain remarked. He emphasized the need for greater awareness at the central government level and proposed bringing delegations from all parties to witness the ground reality firsthand.
Hussain’s comments underscore the disconnect between the central government and the lived experiences of the people in Assam. Residents of the char areas, who lose their land to erosion, find themselves homeless and living in makeshift tents along roadsides. Stripped of their livelihoods, these displaced individuals are unjustly labeled as encroachers.
The River Brahmaputra, one of the world’s largest and most significant river systems, flows through the Assam valley from Kobo to Dhubri, joined by approximately 33 major tributaries. This contributes to a high sediment load and the river’s notorious braiding, which exacerbates soil erosion. The river’s undercurrents, flowing beneath the surface, intensify the erosion, creating a cycle of destruction that devastates local communities.
The situation calls for urgent and coordinated action to address the dual threats of flooding and soil erosion, safeguarding both lives and livelihoods in Dhubri and the wider Assam region.
