Heartwarming Elephant Rescue: Wayanad Landslide Survivors Moved by Tusker’s Tearful Heroism
In one of Kerala’s most catastrophic landslide and flooding incidents, a remarkable tale of survival and unexpected aid emerged. Sujatha Aninachira and her family were among the fortunate few to escape the calamity that resulted in hundreds of fatalities and numerous missing individuals.
As Sujatha, her son Gireesh, daughter-in-law Sujitha, and granddaughter Mridula sought safety, their neighboring two-story house collapsed, burying them under the rubble. Sujatha managed to free herself and her granddaughter, swimming through the floodwaters with Mridula. Eventually, the family reached a hilltop, only to find themselves face-to-face with a tusker and two female elephants.
In the pitch darkness, just half a meter away from the tusker, Sujatha pleaded tearfully for their lives. To her astonishment, the elephants responded with empathy, standing silently by them through the night. Sujatha recalled seeing tears welling up in the elephant’s eyes as it appeared to understand their dire situation.
“They stood there until morning, providing silent support until other people came to rescue us,” Sujatha recounted, highlighting the extraordinary behavior of the wild elephants during this crisis.
This incredible incident underscores not only the devastation wrought by the Wayanad landslide but also a rare and poignant moment of human-animal solidarity amidst the chaos.
