Empowering Change: Kanimozhi Celebrates Tamil Nadu’s Enhanced Accessibility for Differently-Abled Persons
MP Kanimozhi Distributes Special Equipment to Differently-Abled in Thoothukudi
Thoothukudi witnessed a significant event on August 3, as MP K. Kanimozhi distributed special equipment to differently-abled individuals. The distribution camp was organized under the CSR initiative of Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) Limited, in collaboration with Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO) and Thoothukudi district administration.
During her speech, Kanimozhi highlighted the Tamil Nadu government’s continuous efforts to support the differently-abled. She recalled the late CM M. Karunanidhi’s establishment of a dedicated Ministry for differently-abled people, which ensured significant attention and resources were directed toward their needs. This initiative led to the construction of user-friendly ramps in most public office buildings, allowing easy access for the differently-abled and encouraging them to interact with officials independently.
Kanimozhi emphasized that the current government, led by CM M.K. Stalin, has maintained this focus, particularly during the natural calamity in December 2023, providing substantial support to differently-abled individuals. She expressed gratitude to REC and its independent director Narayanan Thirupathy for their liberal funding and hoped for uninterrupted financial support from the Union Government.
She also noted that despite ideological and policy differences between the Union and State Governments, they have worked collaboratively to support the differently-abled.
The event’s significance was further underscored by Thoothukudi District Collector G Lakshmipathi, who presided over the event, and Social Welfare Minister Geetha Jeevan, who outlined the Tamil Nadu government’s achievements in aiding the vulnerable. The occasion saw felicitations from Thoothukudi Mayor P. Jegan and MLA M.C. Shanmugiah. The event concluded with District Differently-Abled Welfare Officer K. B. Piramanayagam proposing the vote of thanks.
This initiative reflects the continuing commitment to ensuring that the differently-abled community receives the necessary support and resources, enhancing their lifestyle and independence.
