Urgent: Turkey Appoints Mashal as Hamas’ Acting Leader After Haniyeh’s Tragic Assassination
The Turkish Foreign Ministry identified Khaled Mashal as the interim chief of Hamas’ political bureau, following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with Mashal in Doha, extending condolences. Haniyeh’s two sons attended the meeting. Hamas has yet to announce a permanent successor to Haniyeh.
According to a Hamas source, a farewell ceremony for Haniyeh will be held in Doha where he resided in recent years, though his final resting place remains undisclosed. Hamas announced that Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli attack on his Tehran residence shortly after attending the inauguration of Iran’s newly elected president. The militant group holds Israel and the United States responsible for his death and has vowed retaliation.
U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin declined to comment on the incident or Israel’s involvement. Simultaneously, The Jerusalem Post reported that Israeli ministers had been instructed not to speak publicly about the assassination.
This development underscores the ongoing tensions between Israel and Hamas, with significant geopolitical implications in the Middle East involving key players such as Turkey, the U.S., and Iran.
