DCCI Backed Plastic Ban with Key Enforcement Caveat Sparks Hope for Cleaner Future | MorungExpress
Dimapur, August 1 (MExN): The Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) has expressed strong support for the Nagaland Government’s decision to impose a comprehensive ban on all single-use plastics (SUPs) across the state. However, the DCCI emphasized that it will only recognize enforcement actions undertaken by the district administration and the Police Commissionerate.
The chamber voiced its concerns regarding the unauthorized checks and penalties often conducted by various unions and organizations when such government directives are issued. According to the DCCI, these entities frequently engage in overzealous enforcement, causing undue harassment to shopkeepers and businesses under the guise of upholding the SUP ban. This has led to situations where individuals or groups act as de facto enforcement officers, imposing hefty fines on traders.
While advocating for the effective implementation of the SUP ban, the DCCI highlighted the detrimental impact of plastic waste on Dimapur’s ecosystems. The organization acknowledged that a previous attempt by the State Government to enforce a plastic ban was met with compliance from the business community in Dimapur, as guided by the DCCI.
The Chamber also called upon the district administration and relevant departments to initiate awareness programs to educate traders about the harmful effects of SUPs and the specifics of the ban. Comprehensive group meetings with shopkeepers and traders were suggested to ensure thorough understanding and compliance with the new regulations.
For any business members facing difficulties or confusion regarding the ban, the DCCI’s Grievances Cell is available for assistance, as per a press release from Vice-President V Shikuto Sema.
Effective from August 1, the Government of Nagaland has enforced a ban on SUP carry bags and water and soft drink bottles with capacities of less than 1 litre, among other items, in a significant move towards environmental conservation.
