Tehran Vows Retaliation After Assassination of Hamas Leader Ismail Haniyeh
Tehran, July 31: Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei pledged retaliation against Israel following the assassination of Hamas Politburo Chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Khamenei made these remarks in a message of condolence to the Palestinian people, labeling Haniyeh’s death a “martyrdom” after an alleged Israeli attack on Wednesday.
Khamenei warned Israel of severe repercussions, stating the assassination had paved the way for a "harsh punishment." The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) accused Israel of the "terrorist attack," which also claimed the life of Haniyeh’s bodyguard. Haniyeh was in Tehran for the swearing-in ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and had frequently visited Iran over the years.
The IRGC strongly condemned the attack as a blatant violation of international laws and promised a harsh response. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, in a social media post, echoed similar sentiments, vowing to defend Iran’s integrity and make Israel regret its "cowardly move."
Iranian authorities have declared a three-day national mourning period for Haniyeh, with his funeral scheduled for Thursday in Tehran.
