Tencent Cloud Reveals the Truth: Why AI Hype Falls Short in Gaming Magic

Tencent Games showcased their innovations at ChinaJoy in Shanghai on July 26, 2024. Liang Chen, Tencent Cloud’s general manager, emphasized that the gaming industry is still experimenting with ChatGPT-like generative AI. As one of the largest global gaming firms, Tencent owns Riot Games, known for hits like League of Legends and Valorant. Chen’s mission includes boosting game manufacturers’ productivity, notably aiding the overseas expansion of Tencent’s mobile game, Honor of Kings.

Generative AI offers potential but remains costly. Tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT have improved AI’s ability to generate human-like content, yet they sometimes produce inaccurate results. “Large-scale application will still take some time,” Chen told CNBC at ChinaJoy, citing the high cost and need for accuracy in AI-generated content, such as historically accurate responses from in-game characters.

Chen highlighted Tencent’s internal AI models, including Hunyuan AI, which assists in verifying historical data for in-game interactions. He avoided commenting on Nvidia, whose advanced chips essential for AI training are restricted for export to China by the U.S.

Despite OpenAI’s ChatGPT being unavailable in China, Tencent, Baidu, and others have developed local AI alternatives. Tencent’s AI Lab introduced the GiiNEX Game AI Engine in March, leveraging generative AI for creating city scenes in games. AI tools have slashed 3D rendering times from five days to just two hours, though overall production timelines remain influenced by quality demands and user interest.

Chen noted the exploration phase of AI in gaming but anticipated increasing annual investments. Tencent’s domestic games revenue dipped by 2% to 34.5 billion yuan in Q1, while international revenue grew by 3% to 13.6 billion yuan. “It is hoped that one day there will be one or several cases that can be replicated quickly,” he said, pointing to potential future breakthroughs in AI application.
