Assam’s Kokrajhar Gears Up for the 133rd Durand Cup
Guwahati: The anticipation in Assam’s Kokrajhar is palpable as the region readies itself for the first of seven matches in the 133rd Durand Cup at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Stadium. Scheduled from July 30, 2024, to August 21, 2024, the tournament kicks off with heightened excitement following the trophy display ceremony at the Bodofa Auditorium on July 14 and a trophy tour across five Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) districts.
The opening ceremony at SAI Stadium on Tuesday, July 30, is set to commence at 3 pm, with gates welcoming spectators from 12 noon. The Indian Army, in partnership with the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), has meticulously prepared for the event, ensuring no detail is overlooked. The stadium has been extensively renovated, featuring upgraded floodlights for night matches and a new state-of-the-art drainage system to handle rain disruptions.
Adding to the fanfare, spectators can look forward to thrilling military displays from India’s armed forces and a vibrant cultural fiesta by locals. These celebrations coincide with BTR’s Anti-Terrorism Day, symbolizing restored peace and prosperity in the area.
The inaugural match promises an electrifying clash between local favorites Bodoland FC and North East United FC, each team showcasing talented players and seasoned coaches. As part of this historic tournament, other matches will also take place in Kolkata, Shillong, and Jamshedpur, with a total of 24 teams competing for the prestigious Durand Cup Trophies.
Football enthusiasts across the region eagerly await what promises to be a memorable sporting event, cementing Kokrajhar’s place on the national football map.
