Israel Launches Devastating Strike on Beirut: Targeting Key Hezbollah Leader
The Israeli military announced a strike on Beirut on Tuesday, targeting a militant commander allegedly responsible for a rocket attack that killed 12 children and teens in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights over the weekend. Israel has attributed the attack to the Hezbollah militant group, although Hezbollah has denied any involvement. According to a Hezbollah official and the group’s TV station, the airstrike hit Hezbollah’s stronghold in Haret Hreik, a southern suburb of Beirut, causing significant damage to several buildings. It remains unclear if any Hezbollah officials were specifically targeted.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had previously vowed severe retaliation against Hezbollah for the rocket strike. Meanwhile, tensions continue to escalate within Israel. Soldiers were scheduled to appear before a military court on allegations of sexually abusing a Palestinian detainee at a facility where Israel has been holding Gaza prisoners during the ongoing conflict. Protests have erupted among hard-line nationalists in Netanyahu’s government, and an investigation by The Associated Press revealed dire conditions at the Sde Teiman detention facility, despite denials of abuses by Israeli authorities.
In Gaza, the aftermath of Israeli forces withdrawing from Khan Younis revealed further destruction and numerous bodies. The Gaza Health Ministry reports that over 39,300 people have been killed since Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel ignited the current conflict. Appalling sanitary conditions have led to the outbreak of diseases in overcrowded tent camps housing hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, with a collapsed sanitation system causing pools of sewage.
