New Delhi: Government Proposes Emergency Landing Facilities on Assam Highways
The central government has announced plans to establish emergency landing facilities (ELFs) on two stretches of national highways in Assam’s Nagaon and Baksa districts. These ELFs will enhance strategic and rescue operations in the Northeast region.
India currently has seven ELF stretches, with three already completed and four under construction. One of the ongoing projects is a 3.5-kilometer stretch of a four-lane highway in Dibrugarh district, Assam.
These ELFs are intended for both strategic military use and rescue and relief operations during natural disasters. Should the proposed ELF stretches in Nagaon and Baksa be approved, Assam will host three such facilities.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) states that these projects will proceed based on the results of feasibility studies.
