Shocking Blow: Rising Nigerian Boxing Star Cynthia Temitayo Ogunsemilore Faces Suspension Over Doping Allegations
Nigerian Boxer Cynthia Ogunsemilore Suspended for Doping Ahead of Paris Olympics
PARIS — Nigerian boxer Cynthia Temitayo Ogunsemilore has been provisionally suspended for violating anti-doping rules just before her debut fight at the Paris Olympics. The International Testing Agency (ITA) announced the suspension following an adverse analytical finding from a sample taken during an out-of-competition anti-doping test on July 25 in Paris.
The 22-year-old, who was set to compete in the -60 kg category, tested positive for furosemide, a prohibited substance classified as a diuretic and masking agent by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). According to the ITA, the sample’s results were confirmed by the WADA-accredited laboratory in Paris on July 27.
This incident marks the third doping case at the Paris Olympics, following violations by Iraqi judoka Sajjad Sehen and Dominican volleyball player Lisvel Eve Mejia. Ogunsemilore has been notified and provisionally suspended, preventing her from any participation in the Games—training, competition, or coaching—until the case is resolved in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Code and the IOC Anti-Doping Rules for Paris 2024.
Ogunsemilore retains the right to appeal her provisional suspension before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) Anti-Doping Division and can request an analysis of her B-sample.
