Wild Elephant Found Dead in Bhim Pather, Residents Alarmed

A wild elephant was discovered dead on the afternoon of Sunday, July 28, in the Bhim Pather area under the Digboi Forest Range Office, raising significant concern among local residents. The elephant had been wandering the area for several days in search of food, leaving the community alarmed and speculating about the sudden death.

Residents are perplexed and expressed frustration with the promptness and effectiveness of forest officials, claiming they often arrive late and only assess the situation superficially. This incident has magnified existing frustrations with local authorities, specifically the Margherita Sub-Divisional Administration and the Digboi Municipal Board, for their failure to install street lights in areas periodically traversed by wild elephants. These elephants frequently invade residential areas, seeking food and thereby posing risks to both life and property.

Environmentalists, such as Debojit Moran from the Green Bud Society (NGO) Assam, have pointed out exacerbating factors like the sudden closure of the Golai and Bogapani Elephant Corridors, once the largest in Asia. This has disrupted the elephants’ natural movement, forcing them into residential and forest reserve areas to forage.

"The sudden death of the wild elephant in Bhim Pather raises several questions. It could be due to electrocution or food poisoning. We appeal to T. C. Ranjith Ram, Divisional Forest Officer of Digboi, to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident," stated Moran. He highlighted that a similar incident occurred just days earlier in Seema Pather village under the Margherita West Range Forest Office.

Community members and environmental activists are calling for a detailed investigation to uncover the cause of the elephant’s death and to implement preventive measures for the future, aiming to protect both the local population and wildlife.
