Paris, July 27 (IANS): Manu Bhaker’s Stellar Performance in Women’s 10m Air Pistol Lifts Indian Shooting Contingent at Paris 2024 Olympics

Manu Bhaker provided a bright spot for Indian shooting at the Paris 2024 Olympics, advancing to the final of the Women’s 10m Air Pistol event on the competition’s opening day. At the French National Shooting Centre in Chateauroux, Bhaker’s qualifying score of 580 landed her in third place among 44 competitors. She joins Hungary’s Veronika Major, who topped the qualifiers with a score of 582, and six others in the final on Sunday. This marks Bhaker’s first Olympic final appearance.

On a day filled with near misses for the Indian team, Bhaker’s consistent performance across the 60-shot qualification round provided a much-needed morale boost. In contrast, her compatriot Rhythm Sangwan, with a score of 573, finished 15th, missing the finals by four points.

In earlier events, both Indian pairs in the 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team event could not advance past qualifications. Ramita and Arjun Babuta finished sixth out of 28 teams with a score of 628.7, while Elavenil Valarivan and Sandeep Singh ended in 12th place with 626.3. China, Korea, Kazakhstan, and Germany secured the top four spots, proceeding to the medal rounds.

India faced further disappointment in the Men’s 10m Air Pistol category, where Sarabjot Singh narrowly missed the medal round despite tallying the same score of 577 as two other competitors. German shooter Robin Walter edged Singh out for the eighth and final qualifying spot by landing one more inner 10-ring shot. Arjun Singh Cheema also delivered a strong performance, momentarily holding third place, but ultimately finished 18th with a score of 574.

The day saw China’s Sheng Liaho and Huang Yuting take the first gold medal of the Paris Olympics, defeating Korea’s Park Ha-Jun and Keum Ji-Hyeon. Kazakhstan secured bronze with Alexandra Le and Islam Satpayev besting Germany’s Anna Janssen and Maximilian Ulbrich.

The highlights of Bhaker’s performance and the collective determination of the Indian contingent set a tone of resilience as the competition continues.
