PM Asserts Zero Tolerance for Terrorism on Kargil Vijay Diwas
NEW DELHI/DRAS, July 26: India commemorated the 25th anniversary of the Kargil Vijay Diwas on Friday, celebrating the valor of its soldiers during the Kargil conflict. Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a resolute message to Pakistan, stating that any attempts at terrorism or proxy warfare would be met with decisive and overwhelming force.
Events took place nationwide and at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, Ladakh. Both houses of Parliament paused to honor the more than 500 soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the 1999 conflict. President Droupadi Murmu highlighted the courage of the armed forces, urging citizens to draw inspiration from their sacrifice.
The Kargil War began on May 2, 1999, when a shepherd, Tashi Namgyal, reported Pakistani soldiers’ intrusion into the Kargil district. The Indian Army’s Operation Vijay successfully repelled the entrenched forces, culminating in a decisive victory on July 26, 1999. Modi, speaking from Dras, condemned Pakistan’s persistent use of terrorism and reaffirmed India’s readiness to counter any threats.
"In Kargil, we not only won the war but demonstrated truth, restraint, and strength," Modi stated. He emphasized that Pakistan has learned nothing from past defeats and warned that their "nefarious intentions" would fail. Modi lauded the fallen soldiers, declaring that the nation remains forever indebted to their heroism.
The conflict saw Indian troops battling under harsh conditions in Drass, Kargil, and Batalik sectors. Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, also paid homage to the Kargil martyrs. He acknowledged the eternal debt owed to the soldiers for their ultimate sacrifice.
For the families of the fallen soldiers, Kargil Vijay Diwas embodies both pain and pride. One such remembrance includes a soldier visiting the family of his fallen comrade, Udayman Singh, each year since the conflict.
