Paris: Spectacular Opening of the 2024 Summer Olympics
The 2024 Paris Olympics commenced with a dazzling opening ceremony along the Seine River on July 26, 2024. For the first time, the event took place outside a stadium, embracing the heart of the city, which was transformed into a bastion of French culture and brilliance despite heavy rain.
The ceremony featured ceremonial smoke in the French flag’s colors, Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal igniting the Olympic Flame, and electrifying performances, including American singer Lady Gaga rendering Zizi Jeanmaire’s classic "Mon truc en plume." The Parade of Nations saw athletes from nearly 200 countries aboard boats navigating the Seine, providing spectators and viewers unique close-ups via on-board cameras. Iconic landmarks like Parc Urbain La Concorde and the Grand Palais were highlighted along the parade’s route.
A standout moment included legendary Zinedine Zidane passing the Olympic Flame to Rafael Nadal, accompanied by other sports legends like Serena Williams, Carl Lewis, and Nadia Comaneci. This ignited fervent support from the crowd, culminating in a grand fireworks display.
The Indian contingent, led by P.V. Sindhu and Sharath Kamal, featured 78 athletes and officials. Indian participants shone in blue attire, with women in sarees and men in blazers.
