Former President Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, affectionately known as Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, passed away on July 27, 2015, while delivering a speech at the Indian Institute of Management-Shillong. A prolific educator and scientist, Dr. Kalam is celebrated for his monumental contributions to Indian space and military research.
Born on October 15, 1931, in Rameswaram to a Tamil Muslim family, Kalam faced early hardships, selling newspapers to support his family. His hard work and dedication to his studies, particularly in mathematics, eventually led him to major in aerospace engineering and physics.
Dr. Kalam’s illustrious career included key roles at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). He spearheaded the development of the SLV-III project, India’s first satellite launch vehicle, which successfully placed the Rohini satellite into Earth’s orbit. His leadership in the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme earned him the title “Missile Man of India,” overseeing the creation of the anti-tank missile Nag, surface-to-air missile Trishul, and surface-to-surface missile Prithvi.
One of Dr. Kalam’s notable achievements was his collaboration on the 1998 nuclear tests in Pokhran, under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s leadership, which significantly boosted India’s defense capabilities but resulted in financial sanctions from global powers.
In addition to his scientific endeavors, Dr. Kalam, along with cardiologist Soma Raju, developed the low-cost “Kalam-Raju-Stent” in 1998 and the “Kalam-Raju Tablet” in 2012 for remote healthcare.
Dr. Kalam’s legacy is further honored through numerous accolades, including the Padma Bhushan in 1990 and the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 1997.
