Desperate Yet Hopeful: Amid Renewed Clashes, 1,500 Flee Myanmar Seeking Safety in Mizoram
Over 1,500 New Myanmar Refugees Enter Mizoram Amid Renewed Conflict
AIZAWL: The Mizoram Home Department has reported that more than 1,500 new refugees from Myanmar entered Mizoram over the past week. This recent surge results from renewed clashes between the Myanmar Army, known as the Tatmadaw, and an alliance of three ethnic insurgent groups, including the Chin National Army (CNA).
With the latest arrival, the total number of Myanmar refugees taking shelter in Mizoram has exceeded 35,120. The refugees have sought refuge across five districts of Mizoram—Champhai, Serchhip, Lawngtlai, Siaha, and Aizawl—since the military coup in Myanmar in February 2021.
In addition to the influx from Myanmar, around 2,000 Bangladeshi tribals from the Bawm community have also sought refuge in Mizoram since November 2022. These individuals fled the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) in southeast Bangladesh following an offensive by the Bangladeshi Army against the insurgent group Kuki-Chin National Army (KNA).
The Kuki-Zomi-Chin-Bawm tribes in Myanmar, Bangladesh, and the Indian state of Manipur share deep ethnic ties, as well as cultural and linguistic similarities with the Mizo people. This shared heritage has likely contributed to the humanitarian support extended by Mizoram to these refugees.
Mizoram shares a 510-kilometer-long unfenced border with Myanmar and a 318-kilometer international border with Bangladesh, making it a prime sanctuary for those fleeing conflict in neighboring regions.
This continuous flow of refugees highlights the ongoing instability in Myanmar and Bangladesh, and underlines the pressing need for comprehensive humanitarian assistance and international attention to address the plight of those displaced by violence.
