Will the Thrilling Medal Tally Surpass Tokyo’s 7? Discover the Exciting Possibility!
Paris, July 25: India’s 117-Strong Contingent Sets Sights on Olympic Glory
As the Paris Olympic Games kick off on Friday, India’s 117-member team is determined to surpass previous performances. Following a respectable seven-medal haul in Tokyo, expectations are now geared towards achieving a double-digit medal tally.
While wrestlers have faced a turbulent build-up marred by controversies, other athletes report smooth preparations, including international training and top-tier facilities. Despite diligent efforts and unwavering support, replicating Tokyo’s success will be challenging. Aside from reigning Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra in javelin, few Indian athletes are top contenders.
Athletics, shooting, and hockey form the bulk of the team, with 40 debutants among them looking to make a mark. Veteran stars like shuttler PV Sindhu, tennis player Rohan Bopanna, table tennis legend Sharath Kamal, and hockey goalkeeper PR Sreejesh are likely playing their final Olympics, seeking a perfect closure to their illustrious careers.
The hockey team enters with mixed form and faces a tough group comprising Australia, Belgium, Argentina, New Zealand, and Ireland. Boxers and wrestlers have had limited competitive exposure, while shooters, despite a quiet build-up, hold potential through talents like Sift Kaur Samra, Sandeep Singh, and Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar.
Track and field athletes have shown promise, particularly Avinash Sable, but making finals would itself be an achievement. India’s main hopes rest on Chopra and the in-form badminton duo of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy. Though not in top form, Sindhu’s experience might still carry her to the medal rounds.
In shooting, Gagan Narang remains India’s last Olympic medallist from 2012. The wrestling contingent, despite setbacks, could surprise with talents like Anshu Malik, Antim Panghal, and U-23 world champion Reetika Hooda.
With diverse challenges across various sports, India’s journey in Paris promises high stakes and potential dramatic achievements. (PTI)
