GANGTOK: Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba met with Kamlesh Paswan, Minister of State for Rural Development, in New Delhi today to discuss the pressing challenges related to the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in Sikkim.
During the meeting, MP Subba highlighted the unique challenges faced by Sikkim and other Himalayan regions. He emphasized the significant cost disparities in constructing infrastructure in hilly terrains compared to the plains. The MP elaborated that the rugged terrain of the hills requires more resources and effort to build durable roads, making the projects considerably more expensive. For instance, constructing a road in the hills incurs higher costs than building the same road in the plains.
Acknowledging these difficulties, MP Subba urged for adjustments in the rules to offer more financial support to hilly areas. He also stressed the necessity for extended timelines to complete infrastructure projects due to the unpredictable and harsh terrain, which often causes unavoidable delays.
Minister Paswan responded attentively to these concerns, assuring the MP that he would organize a meeting to discuss these issues further with higher authorities and relevant departments. His commitment provides hope that the essential concessions and support will be granted to ensure the successful implementation of PMGSY and MGNREGA in Sikkim and other Himalayan regions.
This engagement highlights the ongoing efforts to address regional disparities and ensure equitable development support across various terrains in India.
