GANGTOK: Guided by Mayor Nell Bahadur Chettri, a delegation from the Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC) is currently in Bengaluru to gain insights into the city’s waste management system. This visit aims to identify effective waste management practices that can be implemented in Gangtok to enhance its cleanliness and sustainability.

The GMC team, comprising Deputy Mayor Tshring Palden Bhutia, Urban Development PCE Sailendra Sharma, Municipal Commissioner R.B. Bhandari, and other officials, is focusing on various aspects of waste management—such as waste collection, segregation, treatment, recycling, reuse, and public-private partnerships. The delegation has observed Bengaluru’s successful decentralized waste management approach, door-to-door waste collection and segregation, technological use in waste tracking, and innovative methods to minimize landfill waste.

During their visit, the team was particularly impressed with the efficiency of the solid waste transfer and automatic waste sorting units at BTM Layout and Koramangala, overseen by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). The GMC delegation also met with BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath to discuss solid waste management strategies.

Based on their findings, the GMC has drafted an action plan aimed at transforming Gangtok’s waste management system. Key proposals include implementing a decentralized system, introducing door-to-door waste collection and segregation, leveraging technology for waste tracking, and fostering public-private partnerships.

Mayor Nell Bahadur Chettri emphasized the educational value of the visit, stating, “The insights gained from Bengaluru will be crucial in making Gangtok a cleaner and more sustainable city.” He also urged citizens to collaborate with the GMC in the endeavor to make Gangtok a zero-waste city.

This exposure visit is expected to pave the way for substantial improvements in Gangtok’s waste management practices, aligning it with successful models from other parts of the country.
